Fragile Ecologies: Contemporary Artists’ Interpretations and Solutions, 1992. Received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. Traveled under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibitions Service (SITES) to eight museums, including: Whatcom Museum of History and Art, Bellingham, WA; San Jose Museum of Art, CA; Madison Art Center, WI; Center for the Fine Arts, Miami; Laguna Art Museum, CA. Artists included: Mel Chin, Helen and Newton Harrison, Patricia Johanson, Nancy Holt, Mierle Ukeles, Susan Boyle and Wilson High School students.

The Expressionist Surface: Contemporary Art in Plaster, 1990. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Artists included: Peter Agostini, Grace Knowlton, Susan Laufer, Manuel Neri, George Segal, Rudolph Serra. Commissioned indoor installations by Claude Fixler, Ray Rapp, and Jonathan Silver.

Classical Myth and Imagery in Contemporary Art, 1988. Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts. Artists included: Arman, Edward Allington, Robert Colescott, Jim Dine, Audrey Flack, Viola Frey, Leon Golub, Komar and Melamid, Carlo Maria Mariani, Anne and Patrick Poirier, Maura Sheehan, Nancy Spero, Mark Tansey. Commissioned an indoor mural by Mary Beth Edelson.

The Heroic Spirit: Classical Sculpture from Ancient Greece to Michelangelo, 1986. A thematic presentation of century-old plaster casts on long-term loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For the museum’s satellite gallery at the Bulova Corporate Center, New York, curated monthly solo exhibitions of emerging artists creating innovative work in all media.

Up Close and Personal: Portraits of the Artist, 2006. 75 works of art in all media from the Ackland Collection.

Family Legacies: The Art of Betye, Lezley and Alison Saar, 2005. Co-curated with Jessica Dallow. Funded by major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Altria Group, Inc. This exhibition traveled to the Pasadena Museum of Contemporary Art, CA; The San Jose Museum of Art, CA; The Palmer Museum of Art, Pennsylvania State University.

Five Artists-Five Faiths: Spirituality in Contemporary Art, 2004. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Henry Luce Foundation. Artists: Helène Aylon, Stephen Antonakos (commissioned installation), Kimsooja, Ahmed Moustafa, Pamela Singh.

Defining Moments: Two Centuries of Photography, in conjunction with Collecting Photography: A Community Dialogue, 2003. Works from the Ackland Collection, private collectors, and art galleries. Traveled to York College Galleries, York, Pennsylvania, 2006.

Eye in the Sky: Visions of Contemporary Art, 2002. Works from the Ackland Collection by Anna Gaskell, Red Grooms, Katsunori Hamanishi, Eero Hiironen, Julie Moos, Vik Muniz, Tony Oursler, Philip Pearlstein, Gerhard Richter, Mark Sheinkman, Wayne Thiebaud, Bruce Wall.

Buddhist Art and Ritual from Nepal and Tibet, 2000-2002. Two-year installation of a Buddhist altar within the gallery of Asian art, funded by the Museum Loan Network.

Michael Rovner: Field One, 2001. Video projection funded by the North Carolina Arts Council.

Collecting Contemporary Art: A Community Dialogue, 2001. Works of art in all media on loan from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles art galleries, and displayed within the context of the Ackland Collection for the public to view and post comments.

Rendezvous North Carolina: Twentieth-Century Sculpture and Sculptors’ Drawings from the Collections of the Ackland Art Museum and the Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, 1999. Artists included Anthony Caro, Eva Hesse, Sol Lewitt, Richard Long, Auguste Rodin, Joyce Scott, Richard Serra, David Smith, Robert Smithson.

The Spirit of Place: Art, Environment, Community, 1998. An exhibition featuring design proposals from five artists to transform the site in front of the Ackland Art Museum. Artists: Elizabeth Conner, Adam Kuby, Andrew Leicester, Winifred Lutz, Ritsuko Taho. Commissioned a temporary outdoor installation by Patrick Dougherty.

Identity Revealed: Meaning and Message in Contemporary Art, 1998. Works by artists in the Ackland Collection: Karel Appel, Chuck Close, Jim Dine, Rimma Gerlovina, Nan Goldin, Jasper Johns, Duane Michaels, Robert Morris, Robert Motherwell, Elizabeth Murray, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, Joan Snyder, Renée Stout, Andy Warhol.

Geometric Abstraction,1997. Works by artists in the Ackland Collection: Josef Albers, Anni Albers, Al Held, Brice Marden, Alfred Jensen, Sol Lewitt, Agnes Martin, Richard Nonas, Joel Shapiro, Frank Stella, Jack Tworkov.

Circles of Divinity: Cross-Cultural Connections, 1997. Works of art from all periods and cultures drawn from the Ackland Collection as well as loans from galleries and private collectors. Commissioned an indoor installation by Native American artist, Sara Bates, who created an Honoring Circle made from found, natural materials.
